Who moved my stilts? As you all heard, XHTML 2.0 is now officially dead. Head and body. Turns out, a lot of people are saddened by the loss of a spec they don’t understand, and if they did, would not bother using (check the comments). Might be further proof that the XHTML 2.0 committee didn’t do a good job keeping in touch with Web developers. If you’re not sure what this means to you*, check out the unofficial FAQ:
There are two meanings to XHTML: technical and marketing. The technical kind (XHTML served using the
application/xhtml+xmlMIME type) is a formulation of HTML as an XML vocabulary. The marketing kind (XHTML served using thetext/htmlMIME type) is processed just like HTML by browsers but the authors attempt to observe slightly different syntax rules in order to make it seem that they are doing something newer and shinier compared to HTML.
It ain’t over yet … HTML5 gives us <video>, and just as quickly, HTML5 takes it away. It’s lovely to have a standard that works in some browsers, and even those require different encoding of the same content. As a stop gap, Kroc Camen has a creative solution to properly display video in all browsers with just two encodings.
There’s still some ways to go before we can get rid of “Flash”.
