There are users out there who don’t know what RSS is. There are users out there (raises hand) who don’t enjoy copying and pasting URLs. So I added a new feature that solves both problems. I’m told it only works for FireFox and IE. You can check it out yourself.
When you click on the RSS button, you see a page with the RSS feed. The URL at the top points to the feed, you can copy that to your RSS feed reader. But FireFox and IE users no longer see an XML document, it gets replaced by a nicely formatted HTML page. A bit of XSLT and CSS styling makes it look human readable.
At the top of the page there’s a short introduction to RSS, and just below a section for subscriptions.
If you’re using an RSS reader application (e.g. FeedDemon), the first button is for you. It uses the feed: protocol, just click on it to subscribe. If you’re using BlogLines, My Yahoo or NewsGator, the other three buttons are for you. Click and it will add the subscription to your account.
Right now it only works on the Web site, I’m still working to add it to the blog. If you know WordPress, drop me a line, maybe we can contribute a feature to 1.6. And if you like it and want to do the same thing on your Web site, the details are here.
Update: User friendly RSS is now working on this blog, and integrates nicely with the WordPress theme.
Update: Fixed the broken details link above. Also, check out frankp’s comment below: the subscribe button and help page are really cool.
